Freestyle wrestling is an activity driven by goals. You may be a recreational wrestler practicing for general fitness regardless of age through to a hard driven, ambitious athlete aiming for honours at both national and international levels. Whatever the case it is necessary to train regularly and diligently and, in that way one’s aspirations may be realized.
The purpose of this section is to deal with training issues from availability of facilities for both Junior and Senior wrestlers though to basic discussion of issues such as nutrition and weight training.
You may have watched wrestling on TV while the Olympics are on, or maybe you’ve watched MMA fighters wrestle as part of a solid package to their fight. Wherever you’ve seen wrestling, you’ve no doubt watched the sort of wrestling we teach and practice at the club.
Freestyle wrestling has it’s roots in “catch-as-can-catch” wrestling, the predecessor and foundation layer of the modern style. These roots are proudly connected to Great Britain and especially to Lancashire where the earlier evolutions of freestyle were being borne out.
As well as Great Britain and Lancastrian involvement, the US also played a pivotal part in developing freestyle wrestling to what we know today.
In modern times, it combines sambo, judo and more traditional aspects of wrestling into one format. The main goal of freestyle wrestling is to throw the opponent to the mat and pin them. Unlike Greco-Roman, freestyle wrestling allows the use of the opponent’s legs to secure offensive and defensive points.
Age Groups
We split wrestling practice into groups;
– Junior Wrestling
– Senior Wrestling
Each group has sessions each week. See timetable here.
Experience/Skill Level
No experience is necessary. Anybody can turn up no matter what skill or experience level.
Whether you have a son or daughter under the age of 16 or you are over 50 and want to take up wrestling to get in shape, get stronger and enjoy a commitment to your goals – turn up and see whether it’s for you! If you’re already a competitive wrestler, Manchester Y Club Wrestling can support your training goals.
Competition
We have made many competitive wrestlers at the club including reaching Olympic level.
The club has a storied and deep history in the United Kingdom wrestling community which arches back to the beginning of the 20th century. Over a hundred years on and we still continue to support and develop talented wrestlers on the national and international wrestling circuits.
Benefits
If you take up wrestling you are working on many different areas which range from strength, endurance, stamina, flexibility and overall fitness. This makes wrestling a very attractive proposition for those interested in gaining increases in these areas and more. As well as the health benefits, wrestling as with many combat orientated disciplines can help build confidence.
Location
All of our training is conducted in the Sports Hall in Y Club in Castlefield, Manchester
